What to Read in April? A Three-Part Reading Journey

Three books: “Time Shelter”, “The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger”, “The Talisman”

In April the world starts to bloom, and the ever-warmer rays of sunshine tempt us out for a stroll. It’s also a brilliant time to refresh your home library, pass older titles on, and look for new inspiration.

If you’re wondering what to pick up this month, we’ve put together a selection of three intriguing reads. You’ll find both a classic on the darker edge of fantasy and contemporary, multi-award-winning fiction that invites deeper reflection.

This series is not sponsored. The only criterion for awarding the Books Factory seal of approval is the subjective value of the books themselves.

“The Talisman” – Stephen King, Peter Straub

When two masters of horror join forces, the result is hard to ignore. First published in 1984, the fantasy novel “The Talisman” is the fruit of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s collaboration, recognised with nominations for the prestigious Locus and World Fantasy Awards.

The book follows twelve-year-old Jack Sawyer, who sets out on a desperate journey across the United States — and its dark parallel counterpart known as the Territories. His goal is to find the titular Talisman, a mythical artefact that alone can save his dying mother.

The story of a young boy determined to rescue the person he loves most genuinely tugs at the heart, while the sinister, unpredictable Territories unsettle and fascinate from the first page to the last. You’ll remember, in particular, the friendship between Jack and Wolf.

King and Straub later wrote a sequel in 2001 titled “Black House”. A third instalment in the cycle, “Other Worlds Than These”, is set to premiere in autumn 2026.

“The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger” – Stephen King

Staying in the worlds conjured by the master from Maine, it’s impossible to overlook the beginning of his magnum opus. “The Gunslinger” (The Dark Tower I) is the first part of the monumental Dark Tower saga, uniquely blending fantasy, western, and science fiction.

The main character is Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger alive in a world that has “moved on” and slowly fallen apart. We follow his endless, near-obsessive pursuit of the mysterious Man in Black across barren, treacherous wastelands. It’s a read steeped in melancholy and a stark, austere atmosphere.

At the same time, Roland’s determination is magnetic. His desperate trek keeps you on edge, pulls you in emotionally, and simply won’t let you put the book down. The novel’s singular mood makes it a perfect starting point for exploring one of the most compelling universes in popular literature.

“Time Shelter” – Georgi Gospodinov

For lovers of literary fiction and deep, philosophical reflection, April’s must-read is “Time Shelter” (orig. Времеубежище / Wremeubeżiszte). This 2020 novel by Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov — honoured with the prestigious International Booker Prize — offers a strikingly original take on human memory and the passing of time.

The plot centres on an unusual clinic in Switzerland, created by Gaustine for patients living with Alzheimer’s. Each floor precisely recreates a different decade of the 20th century, offering patients a safe haven in realities they still remember. Over time, however, this therapeutic experiment slips out of control.

The shelter becomes powerfully tempting even for entirely healthy people, who want to escape the uncertainty of the modern world and hide away in an idealised past. With flair, Gospodinov asks whether nostalgia can become a trap for entire societies.

The book forces us to confront our own fear of forgetting — and of losing our identity.

Time for a literary journey

A well-chosen book can completely transform an April afternoon. Whether you opt for a dark trip through the Territories, a trek alongside the last gunslinger, or a philosophical escape into the past, each of these novels will offer something different — but equally intense — in emotional impact.

Set aside a little time for yourself, brew your favourite coffee, and let these extraordinary stories carry you away.
