French author Marion Brunet has been named the 2025 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) winner. Established in 2002 by the Swedish government, ALMA is the world’s most prestigious prize in children’s and young adult literature, with a prize of 5 million Swedish kronor (approximately 460,000 euros).
Who Is Marion Brunet?
Born in 1976 in the Vaucluse department of France, Marion Brunet spent 15 years working as a special education teacher, supporting young people struggling with mental health issues.
Her professional experiences have significantly shaped her literary work, often focusing on social sensitivity, violence, and young people’s anxieties about the future.
Debut and Literary Career
Brunet made her literary debut in 2013 with the novel “Frangine”, a story about siblings raised by two mothers that tackles issues of homophobia.
Since then, she has published over a dozen books, including romances, thrillers, crime novels, and fantasy tales. Her latest works include the second volume of the “Ilos” trilogy and the novel “Nos armes”, both released in 2024.
Themes and Style
Brunet’s writing is known for its “brilliant, crystal-clear prose”, featuring young protagonists who rebel against exclusion and intolerance.
Her stories often explore contemporary life’s darker, more brutal aspects while drawing on myths and folklore. Themes of friendship, solidarity, and the beauty of nature provide a counterbalance to the challenges depicted in human relationships.
Awards and Recognition
In addition to winning ALMA, Brunet has received numerous accolades, including the Grand Prix de Littérature Policière in 2018 for her novel L’Été circulaire. Her books have been translated into English, Spanish, Catalan, and Russian.
Although acclaimed internationally, Brunet’s works are still gaining recognition in English-speaking markets. This award could mark a turning point in bringing her work to a broader global audience.
Award Ceremony
The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award ceremony will occur on June 9, 2025, at the Konserthuset in Stockholm.
Through her commitment to addressing critical social issues and exceptional literary style, Marion Brunet has rightfully earned her place among the most outstanding creators of children’s and young adult literature.
