If you\u2019re wondering what to pick up this month, we\u2019ve put together a selection of three intriguing reads. You\u2019ll find both a classic on the darker edge of fantasy and contemporary, multi-award-winning fiction that invites deeper reflection.

\u201cThe Talisman\u201d \u2013 Stephen King, Peter Straub <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When two masters of horror join forces, the result is hard to ignore. First published in 1984, the fantasy novel \u201cThe Talisman\u201d is the fruit of Stephen King and Peter Straub\u2019s collaboration, recognised with nominations for the prestigious Locus and World Fantasy Awards.

The book follows twelve-year-old Jack Sawyer, who sets out on a desperate journey across the United States \u2014 and its dark parallel counterpart known as the Territories. His goal is to find the titular Talisman, a mythical artefact that alone can save his dying mother.

The story of a young boy determined to rescue the person he loves most genuinely tugs at the heart, while the sinister, unpredictable Territories unsettle and fascinate from the first page to the last. You\u2019ll remember, in particular, the friendship between Jack and Wolf.

King and Straub later wrote a sequel in 2001 titled \u201cBlack House\u201d. A third instalment in the cycle, \u201cOther Worlds Than These<\/a>\u201d, is set to premiere in autumn 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger\u201d \u2013 Stephen King <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Staying in the worlds conjured by the master from Maine, it\u2019s impossible to overlook the beginning of his magnum opus. \u201cThe Gunslinger\u201d (The Dark Tower I) is the first part of the monumental Dark Tower saga, uniquely blending fantasy, western, and science fiction.

The main character is Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger alive in a world that has \u201cmoved on\u201d and slowly fallen apart. We follow his endless, near-obsessive pursuit of the mysterious Man in Black across barren, treacherous wastelands. It\u2019s a read steeped in melancholy and a stark, austere atmosphere.

At the same time, Roland\u2019s determination is magnetic. His desperate trek keeps you on edge, pulls you in emotionally, and simply won\u2019t let you put the book down. The novel\u2019s singular mood makes it a perfect starting point for exploring one of the most compelling universes in popular literature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTime Shelter\u201d \u2013 Georgi Gospodinov <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For lovers of literary fiction and deep, philosophical reflection, April\u2019s must-read is \u201cTime Shelter\u201d (orig. \u0412\u0440\u0435\u043c\u0435\u0443\u0431\u0435\u0436\u0438\u0449\u0435 \/ Wremeube\u017ciszte). This 2020 novel by Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov \u2014 honoured with the prestigious International Booker Prize \u2014 offers a strikingly original take on human memory and the passing of time.

The plot centres on an unusual clinic in Switzerland, created by Gaustine for patients living with Alzheimer\u2019s. Each floor precisely recreates a different decade of the 20th century, offering patients a safe haven in realities they still remember. Over time, however, this therapeutic experiment slips out of control.

The shelter becomes powerfully tempting even for entirely healthy people, who want to escape the uncertainty of the modern world and hide away in an idealised past. With flair, Gospodinov asks whether nostalgia can become a trap for entire societies.

The book forces us to confront our own fear of forgetting \u2014 and of losing our identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
